Set ups:

A good set up will dramatically improve the tone, intonation, feel and playability of your guitar.

A set up involves the adjustment of the string height at the bridge and nut, truss rod adjustment, neck angle(bolt on necks)and the setting of the string radius in relation to the fingerboard. These adjustments done correctly will make your guitar 'feel' more comfortable to play and thereby improve the playability of the instrument. Getting the right settings for the Action also allows the string to vibrate more freely and thereby causes the instrument to sound fuller and richer in tone. The work also includes a full checkover of the instrument, adjustment of machineheads and intonation, minor fretwork, a clean up and organic oil treatment of the fingerboard (unfinished boards) lubrication of the nut, string trees and bridge.

The most important part of any set up though is matching it to your own playing style. Time is spent with you, the customer, to determine the correct set up to suit your playing style to the guitar you play so that the set up you get is very much tailored to suit . . . yes, you guessed it -   YOU.

Fret Dressing:

worn frets

Fret dressing refers to the levelling and reshaping of worn frets. Over time frets wear down and you may notice they become very flat on the top or even have grooves where the strings have worn them down. The top of a fret should have a gentle arch, the centre of which needs to be directly over the centre of the fret slot, accurate to within thousands of an inch, otherwise the intonation (tuning) of certain notes and chords will be incorrect. Also,  where these frets have become worn 'string buzz' will occur. These worn frets need to be levelled in relation to the other frets on the board and the flat tops rounded to give a correct centre point and minimum string/fret contact to reduce buzzing. The frets are then brought up to a high polish not only so they look great but string bends are silky smooth

Partial Refret: Full Re-Fret:
Sometimes where only a few frets are very badly worn, rather than level the full board, the worn frets are removed and replaced with new fret wire to match the original. These can then be levelled in with the remaining frets allowing the minimum removal of fret height. This work is then completed by dressing the frets and fully setting up the instrument.

Refret

A full refret is required when the frets are so worn or have been dressed so often as to make them too low to re- dress. Generally speaking you would replace again with a similar fretwire although this offers you the chance to try something different. There are many different sizes and styles of fretwire available now and different wires will affect the tone and feel of your guitar. Narrower gauge wires tend to have a crisper brighter sound than wider wires that offer a little more sustain. The work is then completed by fret dressing and fully setting up your instrument.

Buzz Feiten Tuning System:

Buzz Feiten shelf nut

Tuning and intonation on all guitars using the 'even tempered' tuning system is a compromise. Many players struggle with the 'out of tuneness' of certain chords on the instrument. If your guitar has been properly set up with intonation set and you still find this a problem then the Buzz Feiten intonation system could be the answer for you.

I have fitted this system for many of my customers and all have been very pleased with the results. If you would like to know more about the system click on the icon Buzz Feiten Tuning System link

I have this system fitted to my own strat - please call to arrange a suitable time to try it and see for yourself.
